Who's going? I think I'm going to try and see it at midnight. so far, almost all critics from big mags and paperz are giving it 4 of 4 stars.

Finally, another sci/fantasy movie that will rock (I don't consider Star Trek fantasy or ... well, it would not have been that long)

As soon as someone convinces me its not Fern Gully 2 I will probably see it :P

Actually I would probably drag my gf to it for the 3D animation alone if she didn't get headaches from the glasses... I'll be damned if I pay $15 for a movie on my own though (fuck you NYC).

That's my concern .. it's going to be another corporate greed story which is ironic considering the whole purpose of the movie is to make a ton of money ...

Nothing except its been done. With much less pretentious hype.

It would be sort of like someone coming out with the "Charlie Brown Christmas Xtreme!!!!!"

Everything I've heard says that the first 40ish minutes are too documentaryish, the next hour is a sappy unoriginal love story, and the last 40 minutes are an ass-kicking, mind blowing special effects action combat meltdown of awesomeness in which James Cameron shoves every other director in the industry to the ground, and sprays concentrated awesome action scenes all over them in order to assert his dominance.

Pfft.
Like most movies are original stories to begin with.

There are only 7 stories that can ever be told:

1. Overcoming the Monster [monster = whatever is the principal antagonist]
2. The Quest
3. Journey and Return
4. The Comedy [misunderstandings, not necessarily funny]
5. The Tragedy
6. Rebirth
7. Rags to Riches

No movie is original, they are all just versions or compilations of these stories/plots.

Yeah, but Dances With Wolves is one that I think only really works well within the context that it was done... Because it was done very well.

SciFi/Fantasy tends to have the strength of taking issues/concepts that can't typically be addressed within the context of "normal" storytelling by using fantastical story devices as allegory to get around most of that "awkward stuff" which would otherwise get in the way.

Problem being with this particular storyline is it has already been done using the normal storytelling methodology, and done very well. It isn't ground breaking, it isn't unique... It's a "distant future" retread of a pre-existing story. It can still be good, but it'll be stuck in the shadow of what it is retreading.
